Data Engineer

Position Overview

The data engineer is a new position and will play an essential role in helping us achieve our mission by taking our existing data platform to the next level. The data engineer will improve our ETL efficiency, design modular, scalable data processes, and develop new ways to allow users to submit and analyze data in real time. The data engineer will report to Kenli Okada, EmpowerK12’s managing director. 

Responsibilities

  • Anything it takes to serve our partners’ needs
  • Move our data platform from v1.0 to v2.0 by increasing our ETL scalability and developing error-proof pipelines
  • Ensure all the data our partners see in their data warehouses and Power BI dashboards is error free
  • Develop robust, modular data systems using the Microsoft Azure stack
  • Create new methods for educators to efficiently input and modify data during meetings and analyze that data in real time
  • Train our data analysts and specialists on the new tools you create

  • Meticulous about writing modular, well-commented code (e.g. Python or SQL)
  • Systematic thinker who is skilled at cleaning data, error-handling, and creating error-proof ETL pipelines
  • Understands how to build interactive dashboards by collaborating with school partners to identify critical metrics and visualizations and by identifying the requisite underlying data model needed to power the dashboard

Experience and Education

  • 3+ years of data engineering experience
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher

Educational Improvement Specialist

Position Overview

The educational improvement specialist is a new position and will play an essential role in helping us achieve our mission by working directly with teachers to develop their continuous improvement skills. Since teachers are the primary drivers of student success, it is critical that they are empowered to own their improvement journey – from determining changes they need to implement in their classrooms to evaluating success and spreading what they learned along the way. The specialist will expand upon our current continuous improvement work by facilitating educator improvement networks across the city. The specialist will report to Kristen Wolfe, EmpowerK12’s continuous improvement lead. 

Responsibilities

  • Anything it takes to serve our partners’ needs
  • Lead multiple educator continuous improvement networks across DC schools in both the traditional public and public charter sectors focusing on outcomes for students with disabilities. This includes, but is not limited to:
    • Meet one-on-one with teachers on a biweekly basis to guide them in implementing continuous improvement cycles
    • Train school administrators and coaches in continuous improvement methods
    • Facilitate quarterly network meetings that efficiently move forward the learning process by effectively sharing knowledge gained from individual teachers/schools
  • Produce summaries of current educational research on focus areas such as students with disabilities, vulnerable/highest need students, and middle school that can be used to support educators citywide in their continuous improvement work

Experience and Education

  • 3+ years of PK-12 teaching/classroom experience, 5+ years in public schools or similar experience preferred
  • Special education, continuous improvement, and/or data meeting facilitator experience is a plus
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher

Summer Education Data Intern

Position Overview

EmpowerK12 is looking for a strong undergraduate or graduate student to join our team as a summer intern. This position will primarily assist our team in providing data support to our local public-school partners. To do this, you will learn and perfect various technical skills such as data visualization in Microsoft Power BI as well as how to write and execute complex SQL queries. Our ideal candidate has strong analytical skills, experience with data visualization, problem-solving abilities and communicates well. This position will report directly to Josh Boots, Executive Director. 

Responsibilities

  • Anything it takes to serve our partners’ needs
  • Build interactive Power BI dashboards by collaborating with school partners
  • Perform quality control on deliverables to school partners
  • Develop and perform robust data quality checks for our customized data model
  • Assist staff in giving presentations to and facilitating meetings with school partners
  • Preparing literature reviews on current education research
